How to market a book

Writing a book is the easy part, the hard part is marketing your book. Most authors don’t know what to do after their book is live or how to market a book to save their skin. In fact, more than half of the authors don’t go beyond selling a few books to their friends, family and colleagues if they are lucky.

How to market a book
How to market a book
Here are a few things you can do to start marketing your book on the net:

Create a twitter account and start tweeting about your book. It’s easy enough. Include your cover image and use appropriate hash tags.

Promote on LinkedIn. There are tons of groups on LinkedIn where authors can share their books, exchange ideas and even promote their books.

Don’t forget the good old Facebook for marketing your book. Enough said on Facebook promotion! But you will be surprised how many groups and pages there are on Facebook dedicated on marketing your book. Do join them but whatever you do don’t spam them. You can start off by joining the BookMuni Facebook group here.

Scoopit is another good site where you can promote your book. They have recently included tags which you add wisely.

Pinterest is definitely a place where you should be marketing your book. Add your cover image and a link to your books. You can create a Pinterest board just for promoting your books.

Why not create YouTube videos to market your book. Videos are easy to make, you can do slideshows or you can do simple trailer for your book. Don’t forget to include a link to your book in the description.

Create a website. It’s easy to create a blog. I suggest you start on a free blogging platform and once you have enough confidence then buy a domain name and transfer your blog to make it look professional.

Amazon Kindle Book Marketing Essentials

Many authors/writers have discovered the power and potential of the Amazon Kindle marketplace for selling their books.

For eBooks priced from $0.99 to $2.98, and eBooks priced at $10.00 or more, Amazon pays 35% in royalties on all products sold. For eBooks priced between $2.99 and $9.99, Amazon pays royalties equal to 70% on all products sold.

Without a doubt, some book authors are making an absolute killing by self-publishing their books on Amazon. A good friend of mine is making half a million a year with her books on the Kindle platform.

It is possible to make a nice living selling nonfiction on Amazon, but the people collecting the largest royalty checks are those who are writing fiction.

Publishing Essentials

Amazon Kindle is an attractive place to publish books, because absolutely anyone who is willing to set up a Kindle Digital Publishing account can upload a manuscript and start selling their books within 24 hours in most cases.

Amazon is also the largest "buyer search engine" on the Internet, meaning that the people using Amazon's search tool are looking for products to purchase.

When you load your book to the Amazon website, there are a few key pieces of information you will need to include with your book upload:

Must be logged into an Amazon Account;

Title;

Author (Pen Names are acceptable);

Description;

Categories;

Keywords;

Description;

Image representing Book Cover;

Book Manuscript;

Prices;

Choose optional Amazon promotional programs.

Book Marketing Essentials

In most cases, the primary marketing tools you need are six items:

Title that will catch the shopper's attention;

Book Cover that assures the shopper that this book will give them what they want;

Category choices that will allow it to be found by its target audience;

Keywords that could help people using the search function find the book;

Book Description that sells the book to the person looking at the book;

A respectable and acceptable Price.

Common Misconception About Book Marketing in General

Many people believe that all they need to do is to create a book and upload it to Amazon, in order to start making money. In part, this is true.

Once the book is uploaded and approved by Amazon, then you can start making sales.

However, your book marketing essentials need to be solid, in order for you to actually find buyers.

You must have an interesting book title.

You must have a book cover that appeals to the reader. The big thing here is that you want your book cover to look like it was professionally designed, rather than designed by your junior high school child or grandchild.

Most important, you must have a compelling book description. The title and cover will get people to open your sales page, but it is your description that will sell the book for you.

It is sad, but most self-published authors will spend several months writing their book and less than ten minutes crafting their book description. Yet, future buyers are looking to the book description to convince them whether they should or should not purchase your book.

If the description stinks, then sales will stink too.

If you construct a compelling description, you could very well find your book on the best sellers list.

Reality Check About Selling Books on Amazon

People tell me all the time that they don't need to worry about marketing their books, because Amazon will do all of their marketing for them.

Here is what you need to understand about Amazon marketing your books for you.

Yes, Amazon wants to sell more products, so they will tell their customers about your books.

But here is the thing...  Amazon's internal marketing machine is completely driven by computer algorithm. An algorithm is a computer program that seeks out products to share with their customers.

Amazon's computer algorithms are designed to find strong selling products and to promote those top-selling items to their customers.

Amazon isn't going to push a product that has only sold ten copies in the last month. Instead, it is going to push products that are currently selling hundreds of units a day, because they are trying to maximize the number of products they can sell. They are not going to promote a product that has lukewarm sales.

If you want to sell lots of books on Amazon, you should refrain from burying your head in the sand.

In order to get Amazon to market your books for you, you have to help your book by getting its sales started on good footing.

You can of course try the marketing approach that most authors take -- upload and pray.

Or, you can invest a little time or money to get your sales rolling, so that the Amazon sales algorithm can find your book and promote it to their customers.

You can advertise your book for free in a number of Facebook groups, on Twitter, or on your own blog. You don't have a blog? Why not?

Or, you can spend a little money and advertise your book on a site like    https://www.bookbub.com/partners/pricing - Bookbub or any of the websites http://www.tckpublishing.com/top-kindle-book-promotion-sites-for-paid-kindle-books-0-99-and-up/ - shown here.

You Are In The Driver's Seat

As a self-published book author, you are not only your own publisher, but you are also your own marketing team.

All you really need to do is to grease the wheels, so that Amazon's internal sales algorithm can find your book and tell their customers about it.

Once Amazon has found your book, then Amazon will do all of your book marketing for you.

Until you can get your sales moving forward, the only hope that your book will have for good sales is one -- pray hard.

Promoting Your "Amazon Published" Book or eBook Online

You've just gone through the work and the excitement of completing your first book or e-book and you are ready to showcase it to the world. Now, you have to get the word out and try to get some buyers for it. This by the way, is just as strenuous if not even more so than writing the book in the first place. You will realize soon enough that you have to dig deep within yourself to market what you have created to others to make the sales. One author I know when once asked how his books managed to sell so well said. "It's easy. Write it, put it in a place where people can buy it, and then promote the heck out of it for about 3 years."

In this article I don't plan to discuss the myriad of things you can do outside of the Internet to promote your creation such as book signings, getting a table at trade fairs to showcase your book and give away autographed copies, trying to get retailers to sell it (if you've created a bound version of it), etc. The tips provided below are written to help you get maximum publicity for your book or e-book online.

Let's start with building your online selling strategy. Where will you put your book to sell it?

The most popular choice on the Internet is Amazon. This is a very good first step for many books, particularly e-books. Amazon owns Kindle Books, the defacto leader in E-Book marketing and distribution. The whole world has heard of Kindle and there are literally millions of Kindle Readers out there that people can use to read your e-book not to mention that Kindle book reading software is available for computers, tablets and even mobile devices - so it is very easy to distribute and make your creation accessible to others. Amazon also owns "Create Space", a second entity that can turn your E-book into a bound book that can also be sold on Amazon-Kindle and through distributors globally. If you want to "pay-market" your book through Amazon? You can do that as well through building one of their economically priced advertising campaigns.

Going through this process also gets you an ASIN number for your book or an ISBN number for your book if you wish to go that route (needed for selling hard-copy books through Create Space but not for e-books just sold on Amazon-Kindle). You can enroll your book as well into the Kindle KDP Select program which is like an online library that people pay a monthly subscription to and you can get additional royalty payments for your book from here - based on number of pages read. You can also get promotional banners from Amazon that you can put on your website or blogsite and even send in e-mails to people to further promote your book.

Bottom line is that starting out, Amazon - Kindle has a lot to offer a new self-publisher. You can literally get your book out there in under a week and start making money from it if people purchase it.

But you will need to do further work to get your book to actually sell and start earning you revenues. Your book will get onto Amazon OK, but it has to be seen and desired in order for you to make sales. There are books that have sat there for years without any sales at all so don't think your done once you get your book published and onto the site. You have to help the sales happen by promoting it. So below is a list of things you should also be doing yourself online to get people to your Amazon purchased page to buy your book.

Be sure you build out your Author profiles on Amazon Central and on book review sites such as "Good Reads". On Good Reads, also be sure to get your book into their "Listopia" program - so learn how to do that. Find other similar Author sites and get your name out there as well.

Consider getting out an online press release on your book as well. Make sure it has back links to where people can view and purchase your book. Take a look at "Reddit" as one possible site for this.

Promote your book on different social media platforms such as Pinterest, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, etc.

Consider building a YouTube channel and creating a promotional video for your book with linkbacks to where your book can be purchased.

Create your own "Author" blog-site to further promote your book. Traverse the Internet to get linkbacks to your site or book through guest posting, article writing, etc.

Get an automated e-mail marketing and autoresponder system in place and use it to help promote your book - build your e-mail subscriber lists!

Consider getting a podcast series going on iTunes where you can have "podcast discussions" about the content of your book. FYI - Once you get some of these built, stick an image of your book in front of them and upload these to your YouTube channel as well as "Video Podcasts".

Keep posting and guest posting and getting yourself out there with people. The more people that know about you and your book, the better your sales will be. Build relationship bridges with other authors (EzineArticles and Good Reads are good places to do this), with book reviewers, people knowledgeable in your "book space", etc. Get known out there.

Build a Facebook business page for your book and put your author "Good Reads" button onto your Facebook pages that can bring people back to your Author page at GoodReads. Promote your book on Facebook using the "Boost Post" feature - this is a very economical marketing platform with great targeting capabilities.

Be sure to get on Google+ and build out your profile there. Then, search for and join several communities relating to your topic area and also relating to other authors - become a positive content contributor to these communities.

In summary, if you can get through all the above steps for promoting your book online, you will be well on your way of starting to build the base needed to start earning revenues for your book. Best of luck to you in your writing career.

File Formatting Tips

Use the source document for your content whenever possible. For instance, if your PDF was created from a Microsoft Word document, use the original Word file instead of the PDF. If your document was created with another publishing tool, try using the "Save as" or "Export" feature to export as HTML or Microsoft Word.

If your source file is a Microsoft Word document:

The initial formatting you've chosen in Word may be altered slightly to conform to Kindle device specifications. For optimum readability on the Kindle device, it is best to save your Word (.doc) file as "Web Page - filtered" or "HTML - filtered." Don't upload your content with Track Changes on.

Create videos to promote your book

I had someone create this video to promote one of my books. Videos can be a great way to get extra eyeballs to your book. You can create trailers, personal videos or anything about your book. Take a look at this video. A simple video like this is good enough. Make sure you promote your video just like you would do with your book. You can share them on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media sites.

All authors should have a professional blog

I see many authors relying on the free WordPress.com and Blogger blogs to promote their blog. There is no denying that blogs is a great way to show case your work. You can see some of my books listed on this website. But what you must be doing is building a blog on your own domain name like this one here.

There is no better way to look more professional and build an audience. There are more chances of people buying books if they land on your site and discover a professional looking blog. Would you buy a book from this site or this one. Both of them are my own. I use the main one to promote the books that I have written in the form of blog posts and I use the free ones to build back links to the book as seen here. Both the blogs does the trick but a professional looking blog gives you that extra punch.

What do you need for a professional looking blog? First you need a domain name and then hosting. I suggest you use BlueHost which you can use. It takes about 10 minutes or less create a blog if you use BlueHost. They not only provide you will a free domain name, you can control all aspects of your domain from their control panel.

Here are the steps you need to create a blog:

1. Head over to BlueHost and click on the “sign up now” button find your domain name.

2. Once you have found your desired domain name then fill up all your details.

3. Find the most appropriate package. The best one to go for is the $6.95 monthly plan. You have to pay yearly though.

4. Once you have signed up, you will be given all the details for your domain name and your hosting. You will be then be taken to your control panel.

5. Click on Fanstastico or where it says WordPress where you can upload WordPress where is says install.

6. Choose a user name and password for your WordPress blog and you are ready to go.

It does sound intimidating but trust me; there is no substitute to a professional blog.

Book Promotion: Using Video Tips to Promote Your Book

How to promote your books? This is a million dollar question. Here's an interesting video by Julie Issac on how to promote your books using videos. Videos are great ways to promote your books. Basically she is saying that you should write your top 20 tips, the best tips that you know, and use it everyday.  The second is about keywords! Write down your keywords that you can use to write blog posts. If you are a blogger and an internet marketer than you will know the importance of keywords in blogging. This video is about 2 years old but she knows what she's talking about and is still relevant today. Watch the video below to find out on how to promote your books using videos.

How to remove the page number from the first page

If you are creating a document then a page number on the first page does not look right. In fact, your first page is going to be the page just after the cover and most likely it is going to have the name of book. So you don't want it to show on the first page. But the question is how do you remove it? Here's a step by step by guide.

1. Go to your page layout tab.
2. Then choose the page set up option
3. Once the dialogue box is open then choose the layout option.
4. Then check the different first page.
4. Press OK.
That's all, simple as that.

How to remove the page number from the first page
Here's a great video explaining on how to get rid of the number from the first page of your document.

5 things you must do when your new book is out

how to promote your book

If you are self publishing your book then you have to do the promotions yourself. Basically you are the author and marketer all rolled into one.

As soon as your book is published, you must do these 5 things:

1. Post it on Facebook

This will let your friends and followers know that your new ebook/book is out. You should also join several book promotion Facebook group including this one.

2. Post in on Twitter

If you have been using Twitter then you must tweet about your new book. Don’t forget to add a hastag (#). You can use hastags like #book, #fantasy etc whichever is appropriate for your book.

3. Post it LinkedIn.

Everyone I know has a linkedIn account. Make sure you post the URL of the book with a few lines of description.

4. Post it in Pinterest

Take a look at my books Pinterest board I created to post books from this website. So far it has 129 followers, not a lot but hopefully it will grow in size.

5. Post it on Google+

This is a very powerful social media tool and its growing in size so don’t ignore it. You can now use hashtags just like Twitter and Facebook so use.

Take a look at the image above. Amazon provides social media buttons you need for you to promote you book, all you need is to click them. Except for the Pinterest button, I suggest you click on them every week.

So once you have submitted your book for publication and waiting anxiously for the email that says, “Congratulations, your book is now available on the Amazon market place”, write a blog post to publish on your website. So that once it is published, you know what to do.

For more ways to promote your books, read here.

Do a press release for every book launch

Press release is a great way to get the word out for your new book. I suggest that every book you publish, you must do at least one press release. There are many press release sites that you can choose from. The one that I regularly use is prlog.org which is free to use. They are one of the best ones. However with prlog.org, you will need to register using a proper email address and not a free one such as gmail, hotmail or yahoo email. You will need to buy a proper email address or a domain name and set up a custom email address.

What press releases do is, distribute your news to other sites including Google News, Yahoo and Bing. But do remember, there is no guarantee that it will actually get you more sales just a bit of extra exposure.

In addition to a press release for you book, another thing you can do is send me a synopsis of your book just like Elle did with her new book. After I published that post, I tweeted and shared it on my various social media sites. The idea is simple, get the word out to as much eye-balls as you can.

So here's a press release I did for my latest book. They also give you a PDF format of the press release which you can further distribute.
I have been doing press releases for product launches be it websites, books and services. I have realised that there is more to press releases that just writing what the book is about. There are many things to consider such as wordings, catchy titles, headings that work best for the search engines, keywords, categories, images, paragraph structure and so on.

If you need help getting a press release for your book launch then you can look at some of my book promotion services. Just feel free to get in touch. Here's more of my services. Just send me an email and I can get you sorted out on your next press release.

Bookmark this site now and I will be listing a set of sites that do free press releases. I will also be publishing tips on how to get the most of these releases.

How to self publish your book

Do you want to self publish a book but don't know where and how to start? It is hard for someone who has not published a book before but it doesn't have to be that way. Anyone one can self publish a book from the comfort of their home. Download this free book called HOW TO SELF-PUBLISH YOUR BOOK and you too can start publishing your books for people to buy.

Respond to 1 star review

How do you tackle a malicious review? What do you do if someone buys your book and leaves a 1 star review without actually reading it? This is exactly what happened to me. Take a look at the review on this page. Most of the points are wrong. It appears as if the reviewer has not even read the book and decided to makes some false statements about the book.

Respond to 1 star review

The only way to tackle is that you do a rebuttal. Read the rebuttal below. Although most authors and book promotion experts would suggest that you do not respond to reviews at any costs but in this case, I was compelled do so. I addressed all the points made by the reviewer.

respond to negative feedback

By the way, there are no shortages of nice people too who are willing to download, read and write a review for you.

Book promotion tip

I have a hot tip for you today. Whenever you insert your cover image in the blog post, link the image to your book. This will then be picked up by the search engines which will then lead searchers to your book and hopefully more sales.
**Click on the image and see where the image leads to.
Alt tags in Blogger
Always add the ALT tags to your cover image. Its very easy in Blogger!
Also make a point to add ALT tags to the image. If you are using Blogger, then this is very easy to do. All you need to do is click on the image and then go to "image properties" where you will be able to add the ALT tags. Don't ignore it. Search engine optimisation is important for book sales. Every little helps.
