The Euro is Dead; Long Live the Solid!: A Proposal for a New Monetary System for the Eurozone

This booklet addresses the question, How can we provide a feasible, long term solution for the current serious problem troubling all Eurozone member countries? The author contends that this will be hardly achieved by traditional mainstream economics recipes, not only because these have in the past proved to be mere “patches” providing short term solutions, but because in this particular case, there is another new element nonexistent within previous fiat money environments. We are referring to the element of sovereignty. The author explains how the DLCCS-Dual Level Currency Competition System he proposes addresses the need some countries may have to act asymmetrically vis a vis other Eurozone members, from an economic point of view. HeLa Cells of Henrietta Lacks

Henrietta Lacks was a black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951 at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Her cervical cells were taken and grown in culture by a scientist called George Otto Gey. He called it “HeLa” using the first two letters of the first and last names. It grew like no other cells. He sent the cells to scientists around the world and it became the most widely used cell line in the world. It was the first human immortal cell line.

HeLa cells have helped in many medical discoveries including the polio vaccination and currently spearing heading research in AIDS. Her cells were grown commercially and companies made lots of money from her cells without Henrietta’s or her family’s consent. Sadly, the Lacks families had no clue about the existence of her cells till a few years ago. They are so poor that they can’t even afford health insurance. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book, and found myself floored for a long while after I finished it. The combination of gritty (sometimes horrific) life experiences paired with archetypes (I highly recommend "Poet As Briar Rose" and "Poet In Atlantis" as prime examples, along with "Poet As Ariadne" and, well all the rest). This is not to be approached with a haughty opinion of poetry, as this collection will take the wind right out of you.

From the lamentations of Katrina-wracked New Orleans, to scathing indictments of modern-day sexism and a childhood that never was, Gwyndyn Alexander's newest release is a tour de force that renewed my love of poetry. You may feel angry. You may cry. You may feel longing. You may feel any of these emotions and more, but the point is you *will* feel something.

I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone old enough to comprehend loss, longing, rage, and the long-term effects of abuse. A must-read for anyone 16 and up.
